Where My Journey to a Better Life Began:
I know firsthand the sadness and frustration of dealing with chronic pain, fatigue, and weight gain. In 1993, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. There were not many effective treatments available at that time to help me deal with this condition. I gained 30 lbs. because the pain and fatigue got in the way of my motivation to exercise. I was also using food to cope. I discovered that inactivity only made me feel worse.
So, fifteen years ago, I began practicing yoga as a way to help manage the symptoms of fibromyalgia. I began exercising again and currently use walking and hiking for my cardiovascular health. I have read and continue to read every book that I can get my hands on about healthy eating and exercise. I’ve since lost the 30 pounds and have maintained it for the past 15 years. The regular practice of yoga, walking, and healthy eating has provided tremendous benefits physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Working with a Life Coach
It was at that time that I went to see a Life Coach. This was invaluable in helping me move forward with my life. My life coach helped me take a look at the various parts of my life and decide how satisfied I was with each particular area. This helped me to identify where to begin in improving my life. She then helped me to connect with my core values and develop a plan with specific action steps to create a life that supported me in living these values. One of the main focuses was to find a balance that would give me the framework to live a healthy, fulfilling life. Both the life coaching and yoga helped me to be more calm, focused and mindful in making decisions about my life and how I would like to live it. I have much more energy and I navigate my life with more ease and joy.
Education and Experience
My personal journey to reclaim my health, along with the knowledge that I’ve gained are the reasons I chose to become a Life Coach. I completed my training as a Certified Professional Life Coach (CPC) through the Academy for Coach Training (currently called Invite Change) in Edmonds, WA in 2002. Following graduation, I established my business, Life Tapestry Coaching, Inc., and have been providing life coaching services ever since.
In 2006, I began my journey to become an Iyengar Yoga Instructor. I completed a six-month teacher training course with Julie Lawrence, a two-year apprenticeship program as well as a mentoring program towards certification with Nina Pileggi, and completed 2 assessments in front of 3 senior teachers to become a Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor at the Introductory II Level. In addition, I have studied with many nationally and internationally recognized teachers in the US and India. I have been practicing yoga for the past 15 years and have been teaching for 8 years. I currently teach at Sunset Yoga Center in Portland, OR (www.sunsetyoga.com ).
Prior to working as a life coach and yoga instructor, I had a career as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for 8 years. I provided direct counseling and assessment services as part of a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team in a hospital setting. I managed a personal caseload and provided services to a variety of hospital programs including inpatient, outpatient, Brain Injury Day Treatment, Work Hardening and Pain Management. I facilitated both individual and group counseling sessions to assist patients in identifying the tools and resources needed to help them take action and move forward.
Additional educational background includes a B.S. in Business Administration through the University of Minnesota, School of Management (1982) and an M.S. in Rehabilitation Psychology through the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1989).
